MATERIAL STORIES

MOTION GRAPHICS, DESIGN, CONCEPT
PROGRAMS: AFTER EFFECTS, ILLUSTRATOR, PHOTOSHOP

Material Stories is an exhibition of HUSH’s design exploration into embodied carbon, materiality, data-driven and generative design processes, and a new type of aesthetic. A piece of design software was developed to visualize the embodied carbon costs of materials which alters that material’s formal output, within an allocated carbon budget.

I worked on the storytelling, design and production of Material Stories. I did the initial explorations for the data visualization of our materials, design options for our final video aesthetic, and worked with the team to develop and design our final edit.

MATERIAL SECTIONS

The material sections of Material Stories presents the data visualization of our selected materials and their embodied carbon rate. It is important that this section is clear and allows the viewer to understand the form and data visualization inspirations, as well as admire the object renders.

The above animated sections went through many iterations while we were searching for the design style of our final edit, as well as negotiating what story we wanted to tell.

The entire video itself also went through a dramatic transformation from start to finish; below is a glimpse of the behind-the-scenes storyboards, styleframes, motion tests and narrative changes.

FORM AND DATA VISUALIZATION CONCEPTING

These 2D studies and concepts were passed onto our 3D designer and creative technologist to bring to life in the renders below.
